It began at the Lincoln Memorial late Friday afternoon.  At the end of the Indigenous Peoples March, a Native American man was singing and beating his drum.  Suddenly he found himself surrounded by a large group of mostly white teenagers wearing “Make America Great” hats.  What followed was painful to watch as a teen in his MAGA hat taunted the Native American, staring at him with a smirk.  It turns out the students were in Washington for another rally, the March for Life.  We’ve learned today that the group was from Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills Kentucky, near Cincinnati.  Covington is an all boys prep school.  From The New York Times:

“In a statement, the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School condemned the behavior by the students and extended their “deepest apologies” to the elder, as well as to Native Americans in general.”

The school also said the students involved would face discipline possibly including expulsion.

The Native American who was mobbed and taunted was identified as Nathan Phillips, an Omaha elder and Vietnam Veteran.  He said the teens were shouting “build that wall” and he felt threatened as the students closed in.
