Appearing on NBC News’ Meet the Press, Delaware Democratic Senator Chris Coons seemed a rational voice in a sea of Republican rhetoric. Coons believes majority leader Mitch McConnell needs to meet with Chuck Schumer, the minority leader, to work out rules for the impeachment trial of Donald Trump and not to treat it as a coordinated exercise with the White House.
But Coons also expressed alarm at what Trump might do if he’s acquitted.
“If he is ultimately exonerated in the Senate, if the Senate Republican majority refuses to discipline him through impeachment, he will be unbounded. And I’m gravely concerned about what else he might do between now and the 2020 election, when there are no restrictions on his behavior.”
