Joe Biden did a wide-ranging interview with The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert covering some ground we haven’t seen him talk about in other interviews, including his thoughts on how Republicans have handled the six weeks since the election. While he acknowledges that members of the GOP party have been in a “tough spot,” he did admit that his friendship with Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has been strained:
“Lindsey’s been a personal disappointment because I was a personal friend of his. But look I think I can work with Republican leadership in the House and Senate. I think we can get things done. And I think once this president is no longer in office, I think you will see his impact on body politic fade and a lot of these Republicans will feel they have a lot more room to run and cooperate.”
Biden also addressed the news that his son Hunter is constantly under attack by ring-wing media, (and the president himself) and is facing a federal investigation into his taxes.
“We have great confidence in our son. I am not concerned about any accusations made against him. It’s used to get to me. I think it’s kind of foul play. But look, it is what it is, and he’s a grown man. He is the smartest man I know in terms of pure intellectual capacity. And as long as he’s good, we’re good.”
Jill Biden also joined the interview, addressing those who have criticized her for using the title “Dr:”
“That was such a surprise… It was really the tone of it. He called me ‘kiddo.’ One of the things I am most proud of is my doctorate. I worked so hard for it.”
The president-elect held back on his response to the attacks against the incoming first lady saying, “I have been suppressing my Irish-ness for a long time.”
