The conflict in the Middle East escalated Tuesday as the Israeli military and Palestinian forces exchanged devastating rocket fire. During the evening, militants in Gaza fired hundreds of rockets at Tel Aviv, killing at least two people and sending scores of others scrambling for safety in bomb shelters.  At least 28 people in the Palestinian territory were killed by Israeli airstrikes, including ten children, according to Palestinian officials. More than a hundred others wounded.

Some of the video footage coming out of Tel Aviv shows a barrage of rockets targeting Israel’s second-biggest city. Many were intercepted by Israeli air defense systems, but some made it through.

One missile hit an empty street bus, but the resulting blast injured three people, including a little girl.

Sirens blared nonstop Tuesday night in the town of Ashkelon. A CNN crew in the coastal town, which is near Gaza, reported hearing at least 50 explosions. Rocket fire was also reported in the city of Ashdod. At least 17 Israeli civilians have been injured in the attacks.
Palestinian militants say the barrage was revenge for an airstrike that hit a tower that houses the offices of several Hamas officials, as well as residential apartments. Israeli officials said they had launched 130 retaliatory air strikes in the Palestinian coastal territory following Hamas’ unexpected missile fire, which began on Monday.
