While in Miami preparing for tonight’s Democratic debate, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) decided to visit a migrant detention facility. After touring the Homestead facility she remarked:
“There weren’t children playing. There weren’t children laughing like children usually do when moving from one place to another. These were children being marched like little soldiers, like little prisoners from one place to another. This is not what we should be doing as a country. These children didn’t commit crimes, these children pose no threat to people here in the United States of America and yet they are locked up for weeks, for months because our government is following a policy of inflicting maximum pain.”
I went to the Homestead, FL detention center this morning to shine a light on what’s happening. There’s no place in this country for operating private prisons that profit off of cruelty. Detention centers like the one in Homestead should be shut down. pic.twitter.com/ttv7ziHATs
