Donald Trump has repeatedly called Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” and it seems she has had enough. Monday morning she tweeted:
“My family (including Fox News-watchers) sat together and talked about what they think of @realDonaldTrump’s attacks on our heritage. And yes, a famous geneticist analyzed my DNA and concluded that it contains Native American ancestry.”
“I get it: @realDonaldTrump is afraid of facts. But I’m not. And the facts are clear. A deep, independent investigation shows my background played no role in any job I got.”
The analysis of Warren’s DNA was done by Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor and expert in the field who won a 2010 MacArthur fellowship, also known as a genius grant, for his work on tracking population migration via DNA analysis.
The report goes on to say:
Bustamante calculated that Warren’s pure Native American ancestor appears in her family tree “in the range of 6-10 generations ago.” That timing fits Warren’s family lore, passed down during her Oklahoma upbringing, that her great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, was at least partially Native American.
For those questioning the timing of the report, the reporter who wrote about it for the Boston Globe, Annie Linskey, says:
“This is something that at The Globe we’ve been tracking so closely. It’s something I’ve been asking about for weeks and weeks and weeks and really months. I just suspected perhaps they were going to go ahead and do something like this. Elizabeth Warren can be kind of surprising. She is a very strategic thinker.”
Warren released a 5 1/2 minute video talking about why she decided to do the DNA test. It looks like a campaign video and some say it may be the kick off to a 2020 presidential campaign. Watch the full video above. She also says:
“I never expected my family’s story to be used as a racist political joke, but I don’t take any fight lying down. I want you to have the power to fight lies with the truth, so here’s a new site for you to review every document for yourself.”
In the meantime, Warren is also hoping Trump makes good on this promise.
By the way, @realDonaldTrump: Remember saying on 7/5 that you’d give $1M to a charity of my choice if my DNA showed Native American ancestry? I remember – and here's the verdict. Trump obviously forgot his pledge to give Warren a million dollars is on videotape. There is no disputing what he said and yet he is denying it this morning.
