The Meteorological Agency of Japan said the quake struck off the coast of Ishinomaki. That’s just 65 miles from Fukushima, where thousands died in 2011 following a magnitude 9.0 earthquake that created a tsunami and nuclear disaster.
Saturday’s earthquake caused tremors in Tokyo, which sits approximately 250 miles away from Ishinomaki.

No deaths, major injuries, or severe damage were reported. The tsunami advisory has been rescinded and Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority said no abnormalities had been detected at three nuclear reactors near the earthquake. An initial report identified the quake as magnitude 7.2, but it was eventually downgraded. The United States Geological Survey reports the earthquake had a depth of 34 miles.
