The Governor of Alabama has declared a state of emergency for 46 counties as a string of tornadoes leaves destruction across the state. Parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia are also under tornado threats. There are now reports that at least 5 people were killed.
ABC News reports that the first tornado hit near Moundville, Alabama, outside of Tuscaloosa around 12:30 pm. Then “just before 2 p.m. local time, an extremely large tornado was confirmed in Vandiver, Alabama, outside of Birmingham.”

The ABC affiliate in Birmingham says there is extensive damage and an unknown number of people are hurt. A reporter for the station quotes the Shelby County Sheriff as saying: “Shelby County has suffered significant tornado damage. We can confirm local residential structures have been completely destroyed. Our priority at the moment is identifying those citizens in need of emergency medical attention.”
