In an exclusive interview with CNBC, Coca-Cola chairman and CEO James Quincey says the controversial Georgia bill is a step backwards for voting rights in the state. Quincey told the business network:
“Let me get crystal clear and unequivocal, this legislation is unacceptable. It is a step backwards and it does not promote principles we have stood for in Georgia around broad access to voting.”
The company executive made the statement six days after the legislation was signed by Governor Brian Kemp. Earlier on Wednesday, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian condemned the law saying it was “unacceptable and does not match Delta’s values.” The New York Times writes:
But the statements won’t change the outcome in Georgia, where the new law introduced stricter voter identification requirements for absentee balloting, limited drop boxes in predominantly Black neighborhoods and expanded the legislature’s power over elections.
“It is regrettable that the sense of urgency came after the legislation was passed and signed into law,” said Darren Walker, the president of the Ford Foundation and a board member at Ralph Lauren, Pepsi and Square.
