While some lawmakers are trying to sweep the siege on Capitol Hill under the rug, saying it’s time to move on, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez describes why this is no time to forget what happened. There are people left scarred from the violent riots, and the New York Democrat is among them. In a revealing video on Instagram, the 31-year-old old said Monday that as people stormed the Capitol, she tried to hide in her bathroom, but then heard someone yell, “Where is she? Where is she?” Choking back tears she recounted, “And this was the moment I thought everything was over. I mean, I thought I was going to die.”

Eventually, she ran to Rep. Katie Porter’s (D-CA) office, asking for a place to hide. Porter talked to MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell about that moment.

Ocasio-Cortez also revealed that the aftermath of the incident has also left her traumatized, especially the behavior of Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) who have demanded she apologize for accusing Republicans of instigating the siege. She likened them to abusers and said this has brought back some dark memories. It’s at this time she revealed she was sexually assaulted in the past.

“These folks who tell us to move on, that it’s not a big deal, that we should forget what’s happened, or even telling us to apologize. These are the same tactics of abusers. And I’m a survivor of sexual assault. And I haven’t told many people that in my life. But when we go through trauma, trauma compounds on each other.”

“We cannot move on without accountability. We cannot heal without accountability. All these people telling us to move on are doing so at their own convenience.”
