The impeachment trial is far from the last time we will see the events surrounding January 6th dissected on Capitol Hill. Today we are learning that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is setting the stage for hearings

Speaker Pelosi said:

To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex… and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region.”

The Washington Post writes:

Pelosi’s letter also arrived as multiple congressional committees are in the process of scheduling hearings in which they will question the heads of agencies involved in preparing for and responding to the attack.

Supporters of the commission say such an initiative will have broader authority than those committees to pursue testimony from those in Trump’s orbit — voices that were not part of the impeachment inquiry. The commission will not be under the time constraints of those committee investigations as it produces its findings.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough says this commission “has to be done for a variety of reasons. First of all, we need to make sure the center of American democracy is never, never as compromised as it was January 6th.” Watch what else he said above.
