More heartbreaking details today about the death of a young girl whose family was trying to seek a better life in the United States. Business Insider writes:
Border officials and facilities are under renewed scrutiny after 7-year-old Jakelin Caal died last week in US Customs and Border Protection custody.
The Guatemalan child died at an El Paso, Texas hospital eight hours after CBP took her into custody.
According to a timeline released by CBP, agents first became aware of the girl’s symptoms during a bus ride to a police station after the girl was apprehended along with a larger group of migrants.
By the time the group arrived at the station 90 minutes later, Jakelin had stopped breathing.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the little girl’s family tells a story that does not mesh with what U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports happened:
The agency said Jakelin had been without food and water for days when she began vomiting and stopped breathing while being transported to a Border Patrol station.
But Ruben Garcia, the director of Annunciation House, the El Paso, Texas, shelter where Caal has been staying since her death, said her father disputed the government’s report.
“She had not suffered from a lack of water or food,” Garcia said.
