Donald Trump has suddenly decided to pull all troops out of Syria and he wants it to happen as soon as possible. The Wall Street Journal reports:
In an abrupt reversal, the U.S. military is preparing to withdraw its forces from northeastern Syria, people familiar with the matter said Wednesday, a move that throws the American strategy in the Middle East into turmoil.
U.S. officials began informing partners in northeastern Syria of their plans to begin immediately pulling American forces out of the region where they have been trying to wrap up the campaign against Islamic State, the people said.
BREAKING – The U.S. is preparing a possible withdrawal from #Syria, per new @DionNissenbaum report in @WSJ.https://t.co/o1BChqFODW
Allies (inc. #UK) have been informed. The call came direct from #Trump.
BUT, there’s an ongoing debate internally. #Bolton, DOD & State furious.

The Washington Post adds:
The decision would remove the entire force of more than 2,000 U.S. servicemembers and end the extended ground mission against the Islamic State, the official said.
After the announcement was made Trump took to Twitter to say, “We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.” But whether ISIS is truly no longer a threat is surely up for debate.
As for who this move does favor? Analysts say it is certainly going to be welcome news for Russia, Iran, and Turkey. Military analyst Retired Lt. Colonel Rick Francona told CNN:
“I’m concerned about the timing now because the Syrian democratic forces that we have been training and working with and supporting has just taken the last remaining stronghold from Isis in the Ukrainian valley. They are on the cusp of pretty much-moving Isis out of that area and now is the not the time to pull back our support.”
He went on to say:
“You pretty much hand control of the country to the Russians, Iranians, and yes in the Northern part, the Turks. This is just another instance where we’re pulling out and leaving an ally there on the ground. And, you know, in the past we have pulled back and left the Kurds on their own and it has not worked out well for the Kurds. And I think this is going to be very, very difficult for the Kurds accept.”
What analysis has the President seen indicating that a Syria controlled by Putin, Khameni, and Assad won’t represent a direct threat to Americans and our interests? Not to mention the broader humanitarian message this sends nor the geo strategic impact.

Did Turkey just stare down Trump in Syria? (More likely that a deal has been cut – perhaps one that will also see Erdogan stop talking about the Khashoggi murder…) https://t.co/yjqkTcJiph
