Donald Trump issues an order banning most transgender people from serving in the military. It reads, in part, “transgender persons are… disqualified from military service except under certain limited circumstances.”

Trump first raised this last July tweeting, “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
Since that statement the “ban” has been tied up in courts and judging by the reaction after this latest announcement there will be more legal action ahead.

What the White House released tonight is transphobia masquerading as policy, for the sole purpose of carrying out President Trump’s reckless and unconstitutional ban. It undermines the ability of trans service members to serve openly and military readiness as a whole.
