President Trump insists that a wall is needed on the southern border not only to stop migrants from entering the U.S., but also to block illegal drugs.
But border authorities say most such drugs cross at official ports of entry, and the latest large seizure is a case in point.
“A truck driver hauling frozen strawberries from Mexico into the United States is in custody,” reports CNN, “after customs officers … found nearly $13 million worth of methamphetamine hidden in the trailer.”
Customs and Border Protection said officers working at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas last weekend inspected the trailer and discovered 350 packages containing more than 900 pounds of alleged methamphetamine concealed among the strawberries. The estimated value: $12.7 million.
The bridge is a major port of entry. CNN quotes Texas officials as saying about 175,000 commercial and passenger vehicles cross it every month.
