We knew Senator Ted Cruz was planning to object to the certification of the Electoral College votes tomorrow, but now we are learning more about his specific plan to contest the votes from Arizona. The Washington Post writes, “The person familiar with Cruz’s plans said the Texas senator, seen as a 2024 presidential hopeful, will join with Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) to contest the results from Biggs’s home state.” This will no doubt win Cruz brownie points with his former nemesis, Donald Trump.
Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) is reportedly going to object to the results in Georgia and Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) has pledged to object to the results in Pennsylvania. The Washington Post writes:
The overall strategy for Cruz and the 10 other senators — who, along with some House lawmakers, discussed the effort in a conference call Monday evening — remains in flux. The president’s allies have discussed a universe of roughly a half-dozen states to challenge, although only Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania have been specifically identified by senators.
These objections are not expected to make any difference to the outcome. AXIOS writes:
Republicans’ objections to the certification process are virtually guaranteed to fail. The Democrats hold a majority in the House, and a number of Republican senators have condemned their colleagues’ efforts as damaging to democracy.
