The GOP tax bill sailed through the House today with 227 members of Congress voting yes and 203 voting against the bill. Every single Democrat voted no and 12 Republicans crossed the aisle to join them. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill later today, where it’s expected to pass as well. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said one of the main reasons they passed this tax bill was to keep a promise the “majority” made. After the bill passed Ryan remarked, “This promise being kept today is one of the most important things that we can do to get the U.S. economy growing faster, to help people get bigger paychecks, to have a fairer tax system and to simplify the system so that people have more peace of mind.” Unfortunately polls show the majority of Americans aren’t at peace with this plan.

Here’s some reaction from those opposed to the bill, including one Congressman who shares a story he calls “How the Grinch Stole Middle Class Tax Cuts.”:
House Republicans just passed their disastrous tax bill. Congratulations to the Koch brothers, massive corporations and billionaire campaign contributors on looting the Treasury and working families. pic.twitter.com/gS6elMdysQ

Shamefully, Republicans were cheering against the children as they rob from their future and ransack the middle class to reward the rich #GOPTaxScam

There are few things more disturbing than hearing the swell of cheers from the @HouseGOP as they raise taxes on 86 million middle class families. #GOPTaxScam
— Nancy Pelosi (@NancyPelosi) December 19, 2017
Today, Republicans sold their souls and principles to give tax breaks to wealthy corporations and their millionaire donors. #GOPTaxScam

I voted no on #GOPTaxScam bc Americans deserve #ABetterDeal than a plan that guts the state and local tax deduction and double-taxes states like NY for taking care of our own, robs the middle class to provide tax breaks for big biz, (1/2)

& rips away #healthcare from millions of Americans. It will also add more than $1 trillion to the national debt. It is shameful that the @HouseGOP would pass a bill as harmful as this. (2/2)

.@AARP opposes #TaxBill because of its negative impact on many older adults, many of whom will receive little (if any) tax benefit & some will see a tax *increase.* And resulting increase in natl. deficit means $25 billion cuts to Medicare next year alone: https://t.co/Y0Nc4zqCBp pic.twitter.com/9hVflPpxGA

…. Unless you are one of the 8M families who makes less than $200,000 and will get a tax increase in 2018. https://t.co/xtNvDWU5vE

This is not a middle-class tax cut. The majority of the benefits will go to the top 1%.
This is not a jobs bill. Corporations will use tax cuts to reward shareholders and invest in automation.
This is a historic heist that we will regret for years to come. #GOPTaxScam
