So far, no Republican Senators, as in zero, have admitted Donald Trump has done anything illegal. However, a few Republicans are breaking ranks, at least a little. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) is out with a new tweet today, that goes farther than any other members of the GOP have gone.
Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) is also showing a little backbone. In a statement to the Omaha World-Herald he said:
“Hold up: Americans don’t look to Chinese commies for the truth. If the Biden kid broke laws by selling his name to Beijing, that’s a matter for American courts, not communist tyrants running torture camps.”
Then there’s Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) who’s speaking out in defense of the whistleblower, but not condemning the president:
“Whistleblowers should be protected. I stand with Chuck Grassley on this. We have laws in place.”
Most other Republicans not named Jim Jordan or Lindsey Graham have remained pretty quiet in terms of defending Trump. So it was a little surprising (or not) today to see Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) a critic of China actually defend the president saying Trump wasn’t making “a real request.”
