If you’re looking for why the sudden chaos in the Senate this morning just as quickly went away, think about this: Democrats weren’t going to change any votes. They (and the White House) are more interested in advancing the Biden agenda.
Early on Saturday, impeachment managers surprised everyone saying they wanted to call witnesses. What was expected to be a quick wrap-up to Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial on Saturday quickly turned to chaos in the Senate chamber with no one seemingly knowing what to do.
Let’s quickly back up to Friday night. CNN reported the details of a profanity-laced phone call between Donald Trump and House minority leader Kevin McCarthy on January 6th, where McCarthy implored Trump to call off the rioters. The call appeared to be evidence that Trump knew the rioters were his supporters and he refused to do anything to stop their attacks. Trump allegedly responded to the attack by saying, “Well Kevin, I guess they care more about the results of the election than you do.”
Details of the call were confirmed by GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington.
On Saturday morning, impeachment managers were keen to call GOP Representative Herrera Beutler to testify.
But after a recess, House impeachment managers and Trump’s attorneys agreed to read her statement into the record. The idea of witnesses quickly went away.
But the real issue here is the future. President Biden wants to get his cabinet confirmed and a pandemic relief bill passed. Don’t think for a second there wasn’t heavy pressure from the White House to be done with Trump’s trial.
