Never in our lifetimes have we had to apologize to our allies for our president. But log on to social media this morning and that’s exactly what you’ll see. Remorseful Americans giving thanks and praise to Canada (Canada!) after an embarrassing performance by Donald Trump in Canada. From The Washington Post:
- Trump’s two-day stop in Quebec for a meeting with the leaders of the Group of Seven industrial nations was exactly the fiasco many feared. On Friday, Trump told reporters that Russia should be welcomed back into the group, which ejected Moscow after its 2014 annexation of Crimea. On Saturday evening, after leaving early to head to Singapore, Trump said he was pulling out of the summit’s joint communique because of comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, “US Tariffs were kind of insulting” and he “will not be pushed around.” Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!

Trudeau didn’t pick a fight. This is a lie just like all the others. Trump is making the United States a global laughingstock, drying up our credibility/influence so badly that the next President can’t get it back.

On 9/11, I was the American Ambassador to #NATO. The first person to suggest NATO invoke Article 5 to defend the U.S. was Canadian Ambassador David Wright. Canadian forces have fought and died with us in Afghanistan. They are still there with us. Eternally grateful. #Canada https://t.co/geYipul7AS

I feel like I should write and pin a tweet that says, for perpetual use –
To our allies worldwide, I am sorry for whatever Trump has done now to embarrass or offend. Please know that he does not speak for most of us. We watch horrified as he ruins long-lasting relationships.

So this is where we begin the day. Donald Trump leaves a 70-year alliance in tatters and jets off to make headlines in more areas he doesn’t understand. Except this time it’s not milk and cheese but nuclear bombs. To quote German Chancellor Angela Merkel, “it’s sobering and a bit depressing.”
