Mark Kelly may have helped the Democrats pick up another Senate seat. The former astronaut is projected to beat Martha McSally in Arizona.
Fox News has projected Kelly will win. With 77% of the precincts reporting Kelly holds a 9-point lead. The Democrat spoke early Wednesday morning.
McSally was appointed to this Senate seat back in 2019, following Senator John McCain’s death. The term on this seat runs until 2022.
If it becomes official, this wouldn’t be McSally’s first defeat for a Senate seat. She was the Republican nominee in 2018, losing to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema.
The Arizona Republic writes:
The race over the past year and a half pitted two retired combat pilots from Tucson against each other.
Kelly embraced centrist positions; McSally leaned deeper into her alliance with President Donald Trump.
McSally trailed Kelly in 41 out of 42 publicly released polls conducted this year. Kelly held a strong fundraising advantage, pulling in $82 million to McSally’s $50 million this cycle.
Late in the race, McSally looking to get a boost from Trump, instead managed to get humiliated. While rallying in the state last week, Trump belittled the Senator calling her up to speak “fast,” saying “They don’t want to hear this.”
