WAPO: Trump rejected plans for a White House statement praising McCain
The president opted instead for a short tweet that mentioned McCain’s family rather than the Arizona senator, who died Saturday after a battle with brain cancer.
The Washington Post is reporting that the White House staff prepared a nice, thoughtful statement on the passing of John McCain, but Donald Trump apparently didn’t think the longtime Senator and political icon deserved it. He instead opted to tweet out 21 impersonal words. Way to hold a grudge.
White House statement, drafted by Sarah Sanders and others, labeled McCain a “hero” and praised his life. Trump didn’t want it released and instead sent tweet offering condolences to his family. https://t.co/vAlM4VuPXp
