NPR: Virginia Legislature Votes To Allow Cities To Remove Confederate Statues
State law has banned any modifications to the monuments. In 2016, Charlottesville sought to remove a Robert E. Lee statue, a decision that partly inspired the violent Unite the Right rally.
The new measure says that the local governments must offer the monuments to museums, historical societies and military battlefields before they are removed.
