NPR: New Owners Of ‘Sports Illustrated’ Set Massive Layoffs, Journalists Rebel
In meetings Thursday afternoon, managers told staff members of the 65-year-old magazine that about half the newsroom would be laid off, according to two people present at the meetings.
A sad day for sports journalism. Much of the SI staff is expected to be replaced by lower-paid freelancers.
It’s extremely rare to work with a group of people as smart, kind, funny, and thoughtful as those who’ve been at Sports Illustrated. I can’t begin to put into words how what a huge loss to the brand these layoffs are. Absolutely gutted.
