NBC News: American Academy of Pediatrics recommends masks in schools this fall
The American Academy of Pediatrics on Monday recommended that all children over the age of 2 wear masks when returning to school this year, regardless of vaccination status.
The AAP, which said its important for children to return to in-person learning this year, recommends that school staff should also wear masks. The AAP is calling the new guidance a “layered approach.”
This goes against CDC recommendations that people who were vaccinated wouldn’t have to wear masks. After this announcement, Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared on CNN saying he understands this may “cause a bit of confusion,” but he pointed out:
“The American Academy of Pediatrics is a thoughtful group… They analyze the situation and if they feel that is the way to go, I think that is a reasonable thing to do.”
Because of the CDC guidelines though it will be up to local and state officials to decide whether it will be mandated in individual districts.
