N.Y. DAILY NEWS: Stephen Sondheim, peerless Broadway songsmith behind ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Sweeney Todd,’ dead at 91
Sondheim, a protege of acclaimed songwriter Oscar Hammerstein II, collected a record eight Tony Awards — including best original Broadway score for three straight years in 1971-73 and a lifetime achievement Tony in 2008.
Sondheim was known for Broadway hits like West Side Story, Sweeney Todd and Into The Woods.
