This spring, Maya and her parents have been among the crew of families like hers shuttling back and forth to Austin to speak out against a slate of anti-transgender bills in the Texas Legislature, including one that would ban her from girls’ gymnastics and another that would redefine as child abuse the gender-affirming medical care she hopes to access.
