Esquire: The Backlash to Jay-Z’s NFL Deal Is Just Beginning
In an interview at Roc Nation headquarters last week, he was asked if he would kneel or stand if the national anthem was being performed. He said, “I think we’ve moved past kneeling. I think it’s time for action.” Add to that the rumors that Jay will soon become the owner of an NFL team…
Questions are swirling about Jay-Z’s recent remarks about kneeling and his deal with the NFL. This morning former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum remarked:
“We’re not beyond kneeling… I was disappointed something didn’t take place between Mr. Kaepernick and Jay Z. I’m not going to pity Colin Kaepernick about not having a job. This wasn’t about that. This is about injustice that continues to be pervasive in our society. That being said, Jay Z is not new to this. I think about the work that he’s done for the Trayvon Martin foundation here, for Sabrina Fulton, for Tracy down here in Florida. He’s conscious about these issues. I just — I’m hopeful, and I’m going to watch it as well, that there’s a bigger plan at play here, because we’re not dealing with a dummy. This is a smart man. He’s a businessman, but he’s someone conscious and aware of the environment and will do something to move the ball forward here.”
