The House Select Committee investigating January 6th has asked GOP minority leader Kevin McCarthy to voluntarily provide information about his communication with Donald Trump around and during the time of the attack on the Capitol. The Washington Post writes:
In a letter to McCarthy, the committee’s chairman, Rep Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), cites the panel’s interest in his correspondence with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows ahead of Jan. 6, along with McCarthy’s communications with Trump during and after the attack. Details of those conversations could provide the committee with further insight into Trump’s state of mind at the time, Thompson wrote.
“We also must learn about how the President’s plans for January 6th came together, and all the other ways he attempted to alter the results of the election,” Thompson wrote. “For example, in advance of January 6th, you reportedly explained to Mark Meadows and the former President that objections to the certification of the electoral votes on January 6th ‘was doomed to fail.’”
The committee is also looking at communications McCarthy had with Trump following the coup attempt where the leader “may also have discussed with President Trump the potential he would face a censure resolution, impeachment, or removal under the 25th Amendment,” Thompson wrote. “It also appears that you may have identified other possible options, including President Trump’s immediate resignation from office,” according to a statement from Thompson.
Thompson proposed meeting McCarthy in February. No word from McCarthy as to whether he’ll agree to the interview. Rep. Jim Jordan has also been called but refused to cooperate with the panel.
Included in the letter to McCarthy was another text from a Fox News host. Laura Ingraham messaged White House chief of staff Mark Meadows last January that Trump needed to discourage protesters with weapons at state Capitols.
