Just when you think we’ve reached bottom of the political barrel, someone takes it to new depths. Or in this case, not a person but a party. The Alabama Republican Party has shocked us at a time when we thought we were numb to bizarre political theater. Thursday, GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore had some horrendous allegations leveled against him. In the 11th hour of his campaign the Washington Post published a story that alleged Moore had inappropriate relations with a minor. The incident(s) happened many years ago but it took official GOP-DC, which hates Roy Moore anyway, about a nanosecond to call for him to withdraw from the race if the allegations were true.
Moore denied it all (the story has 4 victims and 30(!) sources) and blamed the messenger. But what came next was almost as disturbing as the allegations against Moore. Several key Alabama Republicans said, out loud and on the record, that they would vote for Moore even if he was guilty. Let that sink in for a moment. Does being a Republican in Alabama put you above the law? Two GOP county chairmen told a reporter they’d vote for Moore even if there was proof he committed the crime. Maybe it’s time to take a step back from partisan politics and think about the world we’re leaving our children. Is this the lesson we want them to hear? And we thought the growing divide in America, amplified to the Nth degree here, was only destroying our political discourse. This is a moral decay that could destroy our society.
