The number of Americans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender is on the rise, according to a new Gallup poll.
A record 5.6% of U.S. adults identify as LGBT, up more than one percentage point since the last Gallup report on sexual orientation in 2017.
Younger Americans are significantly more likely to be members of the LGBT community. 15.9% of Generation Z (18-23) identifies as LGBT compared to 2% of Baby Boomers.
The majority of LGBT Americans (54.6%) identify as bisexual. The proportion of bisexual LGBT adults is even higher among Gen Z (72%).
Among all U.S. members of the LGBT community, Gallup found, 24.5% identify as gay, 11.7% identify as lesbian, 11.3% identify as transgender, and 3.3% identify as other.
