Reports are emerging that a football coach and a security guard at the school stepped in front of students to shield them from the gunman.  Read it here at the Miami Herald.

The weapon used in Florida school shooting was an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. It’s the same kind of weapon that was used in mass shootings in Newtown, Aurora, and San Bernadino. Via CNN.

The former student suspected of opening fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland may been identified a potential threat to fellow students in the past, according to one teacher.

The 19-year-old ex-student, who has been detained by Broward police, has not been publicly identified as a suspect.

To review:  A shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida at approximately 2:20 pm et.  There are 14 “victims” according to the Broward Co. Sheriff.  A suspect is in custody.

Broward County Schools superintendent Robert Runcie confirmed there were numerous fatalities, but couldn’t confirm the number.

“It’s just a heartbreaking tragedy,” Runcie said.

Runcie said it’s possible the shooter was a former student who entered the school during dismissal. Runcie said there was no warning or threats made before the incident.

Multiple deaths were reported Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and authorities reported a suspect in custody.

Coral Springs Mayor Skip Campbell, whose city contracts fire service in Parkland, confirms there were “multiple fatalities.”

More than 20 people have been injured and at least one person killed after someone opened fire Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in North Broward.

Margate Fire Chief Dan Booker told the Miami Herald that his department is responding to a mass casualty incident at the high school. He confirmed at least one fatality, although he could not confirm how many have been injured or killed.

Exactly what happened at the high school remains unclear, but the shooting has already captured the attention of the Oval Office.

“The President has been made aware of the school shooting in Florida,” Deputy White House Press Secretary Lindsay Walters said. “We are monitoring the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.”

Jude Lenamon, a freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, said the fire alarm went off around 2:30 p.m. That’s when he

“Doesn’t that sound like gunshots?” he said he asked his teacher.

Two minutes later, the school was evacuated, Lenamon said. He said they were rushed out and were moved to a nearby Walmart. The school is south of west Hillsboro Boulevard near the Sawgrass Expressway. 

Coral Springs police said it is an active shooter situation.
