Donald Trump’s official re-election campaign used an image on Facebook ads that was used by Nazis to signify political prisoners in concentration camps.
After receiving several complaints Facebook removed the posts today. A Facebook spokesperson told CNBC:
“We removed these posts and ads for violating our policy against organized hate. Our policy prohibits using a banned hate group’s symbol to identify political prisoners without the context that condemns or discusses the symbol.”
Media Matters writes:
Media Matters president Angelo Carusone said the following: “Despite violating Facebook’s terms of service, the ads were approved by Facebook in the first place. Yet again we see another example where Facebook can’t even meet the bare minimum standards they set for themselves — either because they’re incapable or because they’re in cahoots. Either way, the pattern is alarming.”
Since June 3, the Trump campaign has been running Facebook ads fearmongering about “antifa.” On June 17, the campaign added an inverted red triangle to some variations of the ad — a symbol the Nazis used to designate political prisoners.
The Trump campaign falsely claimed the image is a sign of Antifa. No one can find any evidence of this inverted triangle used by Antifa.
This is an emoji. ?

It’s also a symbol widely used by Antifa. It was used in an ad about Antifa.
It is not in the ADL’s Hate Symbols Database. pic.twitter.com/AY1YRxduf4
