A JetBlue flight out of Buffalo was delayed after authorities determined that its pilot was drunk.

The imbroglio began at 6:15 am when a TSA agent noticed that James Clifton, 52, appeared impaired as he passed through a security checkpoint.

Clifton made it to his cockpit but Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Police met him there and administered a breathalyzer test. His blood alcohol level was .17, over four times the allowable limit for pilots. Clifton’s blood alcohol level would have also banned him from operating a car.

Clifton admitted to having “5-6 [drinks] the night before at dinner,” according to a police report obtained by CNN.

The pilot was not charged with a crime, but a spokeswoman for the TSA said that might change after an investigation is completed.

The New York Times reports:

Derek Dombrowski, a JetBlue spokesman, said in a statement that “the crew member involved has been removed from his duties.” He added that the airline has “a very strict zero tolerance internal alcohol policy” and that it was conducting its own internal investigation.
