Dan Rather: Is Mueller Poised To Unload New Indictments?

Welcome

WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 21: Special counsel Robert Mueller (L) arrives at the U.S. Capitol for closed meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee June 21, 2017 in Washington, DC. The committee meets with Mueller to discuss the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

Expectations are growing in Washington that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is about to reveal a new round of indictments.

In some cases these are hopes and wishes; in others they are fears.

The thinking goes along these lines:

—Mueller is under increasing, relentless attack from Mr. Trump, the President’s allies and enablers designed to shut down his investigations. To give his operation the best chances of surviving, Mueller must reveal more soon, very soon.

—If Mueller doesn’t make public new moves and information before Labor Day (the first Monday in September) he risks being accused of trying to influence November’s mid-term elections.

Labor Day is traditionally considered the start of the “stretch-run” for election campaigns.

–Mueller now has Mr. Trump and his allies on the defensive and in a reactive posture; if he waits until after the elections for his next moves he gives Trump time and a “free-fire zone” for moving  to offense–including fresh arguements for shutting Mueller down.

The problem with Washington expectations is they often prove to be wrong, fueled as they so frequently are by gossip, speculations and guesses.

So…be alert for new, important news breaking around Mueller’s efforts soon. But keep expectations in check.

Only Mueller knows. And so far he is silent as a tomb.
