Cicely Tyson, a Black female actress, who paved the way for so many others, has passed away at the age of 96. She won an Oscar for her supporting role in “Sounder” and a Tony Award at the age of 88 for “The Trip to Bountiful.” She also stole America’s hearts with her roles in “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and “The Help.”

The actress came up at a time when women–especially Black women–were severely underrepresented and mistreated in the industry.

Her death comes two days after the release of her memoir, Just As I Am. She spoke with CBS’ Gayle King about the book this week.
