Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) now has a serious Democratic contender in 2020, Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon. If you asked voters a year ago, Collins may have seemed like a lock for re-election but recent decisions have made her more vulnerable. A recent poll from Critical Insights found that, “Just four out of ten Mainers now approve of the way Susan Collins is handling her job as U.S. Senator.” In a new video Gideon says:
“At one point, maybe she was different than some of the other folks in Washington, but she doesn’t seem that way anymore. Voting for a $1.5 trillion tax cut where almost all benefits went to cooperations and the wealthy. Taking over $1 million from drug companies and the insurance industry. And Susan Collins vote to put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court may be paying off her, but it’s been women’s control over their own health conditions in extreme jeopardy.”
We can defeat Susan Collins, but I need you with me. Outside interests will spend nearly unlimited amounts of money to support her. But if we’re in this together, we are going to win. Can I count on you to chip in now? https://t.co/rjIUUw9HYU #MESen #MEpolitics

The Washington Post points out:
Gideon must first prevail in a Democratic primary before taking on Collins. Two lesser-known candidates have announced bids: Betsy Sweet, a liberal activist who ran unsuccessfully for governor last year; and Bre Kidman, a lawyer.
