In his first television interview since admitting to once appearing in blackface, Virginia governor Ralph Northam spoke with CBS This Morning’s Gayle King. He said he doesn’t want to resign but instead use his experience as a teaching moment:

“I don’t have any excuses for what I did in my early life. But I can just tell you that I have learned, I have a lot more to learn. I‘m a better person, and here as I sit as a 59-year-old man governing the Commonwealth of Virginia, this is really an opportunity, I believe, to make awareness of this issue, to really have a frank dialogue and discussion about race inequity in this country.”

The interview wasn’t without controversy though. There was an eyebrow-raising moment as he referred to slaves as “indentured servants.”
