NPR: Kim Jong Un Wants The U.S. To Know That His Nuclear Arsenal Is Complete
In his annual New Year’s address, North Korea’s leader said his country had completed its nuclear weapons and that the “entire area of the U.S. mainland is within our nuclear strike range.”
North Korea leader Kim Jong Un is starting the new year with a thinly veiled threat to the United States. During his New Year’s address, the dictator reportedly stated that the nuclear weapons button is on his table and that the entire US is now in range (note: U.S. experts say that is not true).
During the speech he also signaled to South Korea that he wants the Olympics to show a united front between North and South Korea. There have been security concerns over having the games there this year. US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has even said there are questions over whether American athletes would attend. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders though, has indicated athletes would go, saying “The U.S. looks forward to participating in the Winter Olympics in South Korea. The protection of Americans is our top priority and we are engaged with the South Koreans and other partner nations to secure the venues.”
