The images over the last 48 hours of Hurricane Michael are devastating, and one would think, hard to ignore. But in the White House, all the attention is tightly focused where it always is, keeping Donald Trump on TV. If you happen to wash up on the South Lawn of the White House, then perhaps the President would make time for you. But talking about something other than himself is just not on the schedule. If the storm victims were looking for comfort and reassurances, well, there’s an election coming up and Trump has made it a priority to become a media storm of his own. Let’s be clear, presidents don’t usually travel to storm zones this soon. That can be disruptive. BUT let’s also point out that presidents usually dedicate a good amount of time to mentioning storm victims. The press secretary, Sarah Sanders, didn’t hold a briefing this week in advance of the storm either, so it would appear this isn’t a priority for this White House.
The absent administration was a major theme on some news shows over the last day. The video of Anderson Cooper above couldn’t make it more clear as it was titled, “Trump chose Kanye over victims.”
The decision to stage a very public meeting with a rap star isn’t the only transgression in the last couple of days. Remember Wednesday night as the storm was wreaking havoc on Florida, still, at Hurricane strength, Trump went to a campaign rally in Pennsylvania because he didn’t want to “disappoint” his fans.
Here is what some other people said about the president’s behavior during the storm.
Amid the aftermath of #HurricaneMichael, a financial market meltdown, and a potential international crisis with Saudi Arabia, on Thursday President Trump met with … Kanye West. https://t.co/NeUAD1mgwe pic.twitter.com/954KLvaV1x

While #HurricaneMichael decimated the southeast with death & destruction, #Trump chose to meet with #Kanye at the #WhiteHouse. Only a game show host as president would think lunch with a rapper Is a bigger state of emergency than a category 4 hurricane. #TeamDl

OVAL OFFICE SHOW: As the Hurricane Michael disaster played out in the Gulf Coast, Pres. Trump was at the White House – holding a photo-op with Kanye West about prison reform – and a range of other topics. @jonkarl was inside the Oval Office. https://t.co/PJiF5cpVBc pic.twitter.com/AXosRxXYM7

So much wrong here.
While the Florida panhandle deals with a rising death toll and the aftermath of Hurricane Michael…President Trump hosted Kanye West in the oval office in what appeared to be a full manic episode.#kanyetrump https://t.co/vs1GhPuA7y

It looks like there are no big plans to address the hurricane today either. What is in the plans? Another campaign rally.
Here’s Trump’s public schedule for tomorrow. Short version: fundraiser and rally in Ohio. (Public schedules don’t include all of a president’s activities.) pic.twitter.com/7ofnwdqQMz

Even if there isn’t much that can be done about the hurricane from the White House, one would think this close to an election, the government would want to appear engaged in the recovery effort. Or not.
