Anderson Cooper was dumbfounded.

“Wow, those are actual members of Congress,” he said, after playing clips of Republican House members claiming the January 6th Capitol riot was “a normal tourist visit” and that the crowd wasn’t full of Trump supporters (watch in Tweet below).

The CNN host pointed to a broader pattern of GOP mendacity and small-mindedness, saying three events from yesterday embody the modern Republican party: the ouster of Trump critic Rep. Liz Cheney from GOP leadership, the Congressional hearing in which Republicans told obvious lies about January 6th, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s ridiculous claim that no members of his caucus dispute the results of the 2020 election.

Cooper played a split screen of Republican Congressmen Andrew Clyde, Paul Gosar, Jody Hice, and Ralph Norman describing the January 6th insurrection in watered-down – or outright false – language next to footage of the violence from that day.

Cooper also played footage of Cheney’s likely replacement, Rep. Elise Stefanik, pushing election related conspiracies.

“These people are completely without shame,” Cooper said.
