Authorities have confirmed a former football player was behind a mass shooting in Rock Hill, South Carolina on Wednesday. Six people were shot, five of them killed. The 6th victim, Robert Shook, is in critical condition. Authorities believe Phillip Adams, who previously played for several teams including the 49ers and Falcons, then took his own life after shooting the others.

One of those killed is said to be a doctor who treated Adams.

A man who had been working at the home, James Lewis, 38, from Gaston, was found shot to death outside, and a sixth person was hospitalized with “serious gunshot wounds,” York County Sheriff’s Office’s spokesperson Trent Faris said.
Dr. Robert Lesslie was well-known in Rock Hill as a doctor, author, loving father and grandfather.
He wrote at least a dozen books, including “Angels in the ER,” a collection of stories from his 25 years as an emergency room doctor. https://t.co/Y0pxdweI2U

NEW: @RepRalphNorman tells me his understanding is that Dr. Robert Lesslie was treating Phillip Adams and had stopped giving Adams medication – he says he was told that triggered the killings – Norman says he was told this by law enforcement. @WBTV_News pic.twitter.com/5u7TzOY3iP

The Lesslie family released a statement saying:
We are truly in the midst of the unimaginable. The losses we are suffering cannot be uttered at this time.
While we know there are no answers that will satisfy the question “why,” we are sure of one thing: we do not grieve as those without hope. Our hope is found in the promise of Jesus Christ, and we are enveloped by peace that surpasses all understanding. To that end, our hearts are bent toward forgiveness and peace. Toward love and connectedness. Toward celebration and unity. We honor all of those involved in this story with prayers and compassion specifically for the Shook family, the Lewis family, and the Adams family.
