Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) used a hearing aimed at discussing the security breakdown on January 6th to push conspiracy theories, but Senate Rules Committee Chairwoman Amy Klobuchar wasn’t letting it go unchecked. During the question and answer portion of the hearing, Johnson cited a right-wing writer who alleged there were four types of people at the Capitol riot. Johnson did this to defend Trump supporters and make it appear they didn’t plan the riot. Here’s part of what he said:
Plain-clothed militants, provocateurs, fake Trump protesters,s and then disciplined uniform calm protesters, I think these are the people who probably planned this. The vast majority of Trump supporters are pro-law enforcement, and the last thing they would do is violate the law.
Johnson also made a ridiculous allegation that “the mood of the crowd was positive and festive.”
After the hearing Senator Klobuchar wrote:
As our hearing concludes, I want to make one thing clear: “provocateurs” did not storm the Capitol. They were not “fake Trump protestors.” The mood on January 6th was not “festive.” That is disinformation.
She also alluded to this as she delivered her closing remarks at the hearing.
Sen. Klobuchar, in addition to making the statement below at the conclusion of today’s security hearing, says: “I knew Ron Johnson was going to be a problem..I’m not one bit surprised that [he] has again engaged in a conspiracy theory-that’s what he does.” pic.twitter.com/ZnrQ2OlLXW

CNN points out the former chief of the Capitol Hill police also debunked Johnson’s claims during the hearing. Watch above.
