At the heart of their case, Democrats want the GOP and those millions watching at home to have one final takeaway: Donald Trump should never be in a position to allow this to happen again. The prosecution rested its case on Thursday, presenting a compelling narrative as to why Trump, and no one else, incited a mob to stop the peaceful transfer of power. Politico writes:
“We humbly, ask you to convict President Trump for the crime for which he is overwhelmingly guilty of,” said Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.), one of nine impeachment managers prosecuting the case. “Because if you don’t, if we pretend this didn’t happen — or worse, if we let it go unanswered — who’s to say it won’t happen again?”
And that is the core of their argument. Convict Donald Trump, not so he’ll go to prison, but to prevent him from every being allowed to run for federal office again.
“I’m not afraid Donald Trump is going to run again,” said Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), an impeachment manager. “I’m afraid he’s going to run again and lose. Because he can do this again.”
House impeachment managers spent two days building a remarkable case with jaw-dropping video that they hope would prove Trump spent months planting the seeds of a “rigged election” and then brought a mob to Washington with the intent of marching on the Capitol and disrupting the certification of Joe Biden.
