A Capitol police officer has died from injuries sustained when a violent mob stormed the Capitol on Wednesday. Officer Brian D. Sicknick was 42-years-old. The New York Times writes:
The circumstances surrounding Mr. Sicknick’s death were not immediately clear, and the Capitol Police said only that he had “passed away due to injuries sustained while on duty.” At some point in the chaos — with the mob rampaging through the halls of Congress while lawmakers were forced to hide under their desks — he was struck with a fire extinguisher, according to two law enforcement officials.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi released a statement saying, “On behalf of the House of Representatives, I send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Officer Brian Sicknick, who died after defending the Capitol complex and protecting those who serve and work here. The perpetrators of Officer Sicknick’s death must be brought to justice.”
Representative Tim Ryan of Ohio (D-OH) is also among those expressing grief over what happened to Sicknick.
“My heart breaks over the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who was injured in the violent assault on the Capitol. My prayers are with his family + colleagues on the force. This tragic loss is a reminder of the bravery of the law enforcement who protect us every day.”
