Joe Biden has put a lot of emphasis on hiring a heavily female staff, and there is one person who stands out as an especially historic pick. Biden nominated Janet Yellen to be Treasury Secretary. She is someone who has broken barriers throughout her career as an economist. The Washington Post writes:
For all the attention surrounding President-elect Joe Biden’s Cabinet nominations, Yellen’s selection struck a particular chord with women in economics and finance. It’s a relatively small group, and the field has long been criticized for its dearth of women. Yet for decades, women have pointed to Yellen as a trailblazer — one who has not just shattered glass ceilings but also given the women around her hammers of their own.
19th News adds, “For many female economists, the ascension of Yellen represents a milestone in the changing culture of the male-dominated economic world.”
When Biden officially nominated Yellen he remarked, “We might have to ask Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote a musical about the first Treasury secretary, Hamilton, to write another musical for the first woman Treasury secretary — Yellen.” And now The Late Show with Stephen Colbert did just that. Watch above.
Congratulations to my friend Janet Yellen on her nomination as US Treasury Secretary. Her intelligence, tenacity and calm approach make Janet a trailblazer for women everywhere. I look forward to tackling yet again the global economic challenges we are facing, together. pic.twitter.com/p6M1neCeoK

The daughter of a Brooklyn schoolteacher and family doctor, Janet Yellen was a summa cum laude Brown economics grad in *1967* and the only woman in her Yale doctoral class in *1971*.
A trailblazer poised to become the first woman Treasury Secretary. After 231 years, about time.
