After spring break, security will be stepped up at Marjory Stoneman Douglas in a way we haven’t seen at many other schools around the country.  Students will soon have clear backpacks, badges and pass through metal detectors. The Miami Herald reports:

“When Marjory Stoneman Douglas High students return from spring break the first week of April, they will only be allowed to use a clear backpack that will be provided to them.

Students will also be required to wear identification badges at all times and could soon see metal detectors installed.”

More troopers will also be on site.

The Sun-Sentinel is also reporting:

“The district has expedited the completion of “single point of entry” measures for campus visitors, which use fencing and door systems to limit access to one entrance. Runcie said the work will be completed at all schools by early 2019.”

These changes are coming after students expressed concerns that their school still wasn’t safe. Two students were charged this week with bringing knives to school, the shooting suspect’s brother was arrested and charged with trespassing at the school (bond was set at $500,000) and a deputy hired to watch the school was caught sleeping in his car.

But many students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas say the extra security isn’t what they are looking for. They want gun control across the country.
