Polls show that Republican John Cornyn has a solid single-digit lead over his Democratic challenger, M.J. Hegar in Texas, but experts say this Senate race isn’t over yet. And the last few weeks show some signals that could turn the tide. Politico reports:
Senate Majority PAC, the largest Democratic super PAC focused on Senate races, is launching a new $8.6 million ad buy for the final two and a half weeks of the election to boost MJ Hegar in her bid against three-term GOP Sen. John Cornyn. It’s the largest outside investment Democrats have made in flipping the GOP stronghold this cycle after then-Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s near-miss against Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018.
Another good sign for Hegar? Today, The Houston Chronicle found that “Texas is leading the country in ballots cast in the 2020 presidential election so far, with more than 4 million votes counted as of Sunday.” Many counties that swing Democrat have already marked record turnout.
So grateful to see @brianschatz and @ChrisMurphyCT going all in for Texas and @mjhegar! Let’s all pitch in and do our part: https://t.co/XGjzu6ZJqF https://t.co/nD6lgPpOzR

In an opinion piece, Washington Post conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin writes:
As Texas tips blue, Cornyn is in a nip-and-tuck race to keep his seat. Perhaps the women, suburban voters, seniors, Blacks and young people who have left the Republican Party will drive him from office. As with Trump, there is no changing Cornyn, so voters better kick him out if they want someone who is not afraid of the MAGA crowd.
Cornyn may not be part of the raving MAGA crowd. But he has supported Trump consistent, even if he now lies about it. He is part of the spineless Republican Senate who lacked nerve to stand up to Trump when it mattered most to his voters back home.

This came after signs that Cornyn may be trying to slightly distance himself from the president. During an interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Cornyn said:
“When I have had differences of opinion, which I have, (I) do that privately… I have found that has allowed me to be much more effective, I believe, than to satisfy those who say I ought to call him out or get into a public fight with him.”
Cornyn compared it to a marriage. It’s a comparison that didn’t go over well with some women, including his opponent.
Did John Cornyn just try to explain away his cowardice with sexism? He doesn’t know enough Texas women. We kick ass. https://t.co/v86l2UDIog
