In the same week that Donald Trump said COVID-19 “affects elderly people,” “nobody young” and “virtually nobody,” we have learned that a 28-year old doctor from Houston passed away from the virus. The Houston Chronicle writes:
Adeline Fagan, a 28-year-old New York native who was completing her second year of residency as an OB-GYN in Houston, tested positive for the infection in early July before her condition worsened and she became hospitalized. By mid-August, she had been on a ventilator and ECMO machine for about two weeks and she was expected to remain on a ventilator for about six more weeks.
Just a few days ago, her father wrote that “Adeline was doing wonderfully.” But then the phone rang “There was a problem and we needed to decide about performing a procedure to relieve the pressure of a massive brain bleed.” She was pronounced dead a short time later. After she passed, her dad said this:
“If you can do one thing, be an “Adeline” in the world. Be passionate about helping others less fortunate, have a smile on your face, a laugh in your heart, and a Disney tune on your lips.”
Her family is trying to use Adeline’s story to raise awareness. In an emotional interview, her sister Maureen Fagan told CNN:
“Everyone could be an Adeline and that’s the scary part of this. And if you can do something as simple as wearing a mask, social distancing. even just using hand sanitizer to do your part… If you can do something so that someone you know isn’t in this situation I think you have a right to do that just as a human being and trying to be a good person.”
"My heart breaks every time I look at something and I remember Adeline and I wake up in the morning and I realize that she's not here and I'm going to have to do that for years and years and years."
