An NAACP lawsuit against Donald Trump in connection with the siege on Capitol Hill is growing today with ten members of Congress adding their names. The Hill reports:
The group of lawmakers joining the case includes House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (N.Y.), a House prosecutor in Trump’s first impeachment trial, as well as progressive Rep. Pramila Jayapal (Wash.) and three former chairs of the Congressional Black Caucus, California Reps. Barbara Lee, Karen Bass and Maxine Waters.
According to the NAACP, the lawsuit accuses “Donald J. Trump, Rudy Giuliani, the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers of conspiring to incite a violent riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, with the goal of preventing Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election.”
The organization alleges that “by preventing Congress from carrying out its official duties, Trump, Giuliani and the hate groups directly violated the 1871 Ku Klux Klan Act.”
In a statement about why he joined the lawsuit, Rep. Steve Cohen wrote, “As I sat in my office on Jan. 6 with rioters roaming the hallways, I feared for my life and thought that I was going to die.”
